Why I founded wayvee hair
As far back as I can remember, I was told my hair was too big, too messy, too unprofessional. By kids, by teachers, by coworkers. In fact, when I was in primary school, I actually used to hate my curls. Yes, hate. Sadface.
When we played ‘Spice Girls’ I desperately wanted to be Baby Spice because in my naive, unformed mind I thought she had the most ‘beautiful blonde hair’. Hello, colonial beauty standards. Instead of my wish being granted, I always had to be Scary. Which, at the time I resented. But if I could choose today, it’d be leopard print all the way, baby.
As I got older the hate subsided but my anti-curl feelings did not. Every Sunday I would spend hours washing, blow drying, straightening and then carefully adding curls back IN to my hair using my straightener. That look would last the whole week (more if I was careful) then I’d rinse and repeat.
Becoming a curly girl
I can’t remember when exactly, but at some point in my 20s I stopped listening to what other people said and started wearing my hair curly. I have to thank my amazing Berlin-based hairdresser at the time, Tash from Wallace Wallace and my current hair guru, Brunswick-based Delilah, for giving me cuts that have allowed my curls to flourish.
Not only was my natural hair wayyy less maintenance, my natural hair made me feel more like myself than I ever had. A feeling I wanted everybody to enjoy.
With more than 10 years spent working behind the scenes in the beauty industry (and many more testing every curly girl method and product under the sun), I’ve accrued enough knowledge to write a book. Or start a beauty brand. Which is why wayvee exists. To pass on the message to curly haired cuties everywhere that it’s cool to be wavy, in every sense of the word. What do I mean by wavy? Weird, wacky, wonderful. The things that make you unique.
I didn’t want to make some generic beauty brand that prioritised perfection. Because sometimes curls just don’t want to curl. They want to frizz, they want to wave, they want dry all weird for no goddamn reason. And that's ok.
I truly believe beauty lies in the imperfection, and that thought is something worth embracing.
Making waves in the hair industry
When I first started thinking about wayvee, not only was I fed up with ‘straight hair’ beauty standards but I had a genuine need for a curly alternative to typical hair accessories on the market. I also wanted something that looked cute in my bathroom and wouldn’t introduce unnecessary waste into the world.
I’ve gone to great lengths to ensure our products are as sustainable as possible, producing everything with local makers and using innovative materials, like our bioresin buttons which are derived from vegetable waste - how cool!
An emphasis on innovation is not the only way I hope wayvee makes waves in the hair industry. This beauty brand’s ethos hinges on bucking the trends and nailing the essentials, with sustainable hair accessories made to help people with all kinds of curly, frizzy, fluffy and textured hair express their naturally wavy selves.
I hope that you’ll love our hero product, Linen Hair Towel, as much as I do. And at the very least, I hope seeing our imagery or reading our words will inspire you to be your wavy self - whomever that may be.
